~ The gift of little things ~

Barn Sweater still in progress
- a small quandary though, maybe you can help me?

The pattern calls for the sweater to have the purl stitch facing outwards...but I also like the knit stitch
- what say you?
Any suggestions. I need to make a choice soon the pockets are going in shortly.

 Reading a remarkable book
" The gift of little things"
 Alice S. Hutchens
About Alice, herself, moving from Minnesota, thru California and settles in my neck of the woods- Whitefish, Montana. A true story, vividly she writes about homesteading near Lost Creek. Encounters with bears and bad weather, a school teacher she lives a beautiful and simple life in the mountains a stones throw from my house. I recognize names and places- for me it's like a Laura Ingalls book- so it 's definitely becoming a favorite.
When I finish reading the book -I hope to locate her homestead. I appreciate this type of  non fiction, local authors preserving and teaching us the history that we are part of.

  1. I like the knit stitch out - I think it shows the colours better (which are divine by the way!) and contrasts with the collar better. I have this issue of Taproots - really need to make this sweater. That book sounds like just my cup of tea!

  3. I love the colors of your sweater! If you still had those colors in your shop, I would buy one of each. I am getting ready to knit that sweater myself.....I agree, I think I like the knit stitch better. Blessings from Kansas!

  9. Well, looks like I'm going against the popular opinion with my vote for the purl side out - I like the softness of it. However, both sides do look great. Go with whatever makes your heart sing, it will be perfect that way :) I loved reading your review of this book, its so much more engaging when you know exactly the places being written about. xo

  10. This all isn't going to make you choice easier....because I, too, vote for the purl side. I love the way it seems to soften the colors and I think the 'rougher' texture goes so well with an outdoor sweater......AND, it will stand out, as so many things we make are knit side showing. (Honestly, you can't lose with either side--both are gorgeous!)

  13. I think we are conditioned to have the stockinette stitch side out and it's sometimes difficult to have the knit side out. I've made a few sweaters that called for the knit stitch out and I decided against it. Now, I wish I had stuck with the pattern. I think I like the knit stitch out, especially with these fun colors! I can't wait to see the finished sweater!

  14. love the colours you are using, it looks great both ways! Can you finish it with the seams being fairly invisible, allowing you to wear it both ways?

  15. Normally I'm a fan of purl being out but with the colors you are using, I think the knit side looks nicer. Hard decision!

  18. I am very much a fan of such literature as well. I find immense satisfaction in being able to seek out the places in books & stories, the characters stick with you that much more. I really think I will take up your suggestion & read this book.

Another fantastic knitting presentation photo, Camilla. It must be such fun to arrange those!

  25. I agree with Leigh M - I too like the softness and blending of the colours on the purl side. That said, both are beautiful and your choice of colours is gorgeous!
